How to manage your NDIS funding

There are three different ways to manage your NDIS funding.

Management & Funding

Understanding your options for managing your funding

When you have a NDIS plan you will need to decide who manages your supports and payments.

You may choose to manage it yourself, have the NDIA manage on your behalf or you may pay a third party to manage this for you – they’re called plan managers.

The three plan management types

There are three main options to manage NDIS funding that accommodate the individual needs of participants

It’s important to understand that the NDIA determines the type of plan management for participants during the assessment stage rather than you selecting.

Plan Management Type 1

Self-managed

Self-managed NDIS plans give you the most control. You will be responsible for directly managing your funds, which in turn means greater flexibility to choose your provider/s of choice.

There are several advantages of self-managing your NDIS plan

Freedom to choose any service provider.

Flexibility in how you use your budget as long as they are in line with your plan.

Freedom to negotiate pricing and services.

If you’re thinking about self-managing your NDIS plan, take into account the following considerations:

Self-managing requires good organisational skills to handle all the paperwork and financial reporting.

You will have the responsibility of ensuring all your supports and services are consistent with NDIS policies.

Managing your NDIS plan obligations will require extra time and effort.

Plan Management Type 2

Plan-managed

Plan-management involves engaging a Plan Manager who is funded through your NDIS plan. They will handle all the financial administration so you can focus on services that matter to you and living your life.

This type of plan is a good middle ground between Self-Management and NDIA-Management – Flexibility and control over the most important aspects of your NDIS plan while having someone else handle all the administrative work

There are several advantages to Plan-management

Access to both registered and non-registered NDIS service providers.

Relief from financial administration responsibilities.

Plan Manager provides extra support in tracking funds and expenses.

If you’re thinking about Plan-Management, take into account the following considerations

You are still an active participant in the decision-making process.

It’s important to choose an experienced and reliable Plan Manager.

Plan Managers can offer advice, but making final decisions is ultimately up to you.

Plan Management Type 3

NDIA-managed

NDIA-management is where the NDIS manages your funding and takes care of all the financial administrative responsibilities, such as budgeting and transactions. In addition to the NDIS looking after your funding, only registered NDIS service providers are available through this type of plan.

There are several advantages to NDIA-management

Minimal administrative burden and stress on you.

The NDIS will take care of all your financial paperwork and administration

Assurance of using NDIS service providers who are registered and vetted.

If you’re thinking about NDIA-Management, take into account the following considerations

You are limited to using only NDIS-registered service providers.

Less flexibility in negotiating costs of services.

Fewer customised service options compared to Self-managed NDIS plans.
