What is covered under the NDIS

The National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) makes decisions about whether someone is eligible to become an NDIS participant. If someone is deemed eligible, the NDIA will then decide how much funding they will receive.

Support categories explained

What is covered under the NDIS?

There are three different types of support budgets that may be funded to participants on an NDIS plan:

1. Core Supports Budget
Assistance with self-care activities such as dressing, showering, and cooking, everyday consumables or aids, low-cost equipment such as walking sticks, household cleaning and yard maintenance, and assistance with social and community participation (including transportation).
2. Capacity Building Budget
Support coordination services to assist with managing supports and help participants reach their individual goals such as employment, health and fitness, education, living arrangements, and relationships.
3. Capital Support Budget
Fund assistive technologies such as wheelchairs or vehicle and home modification to enable mobility including handrail or ramp installations.
Using your NDIS funding

What items can I use my NDIS funding for?

NDIS participants can only use their funds for items listed as NDIS supports. Requested supports are typically funded if it meets all the following criteria:

It is value for money, which means that:

  • The cost of the support is similar to or cheaper than alternative options that can provide you with the same outcome; and/or
  • Purchasing the support is likely to reduce the costs of funding for other supports in the long term.

It is effective and beneficial for you

It helps to maintain your informal supports

It is an NDIS support.
