The National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) makes decisions about whether someone is eligible to become an NDIS participant. If someone is deemed eligible, the NDIA will then decide how much funding they will receive.
The NDIS covers and provides support for a wide range of disabilities.
To apply to the NDIS, the first thing to do is check if you meet the eligibility requirements.
A NDIS plan outlines your goals and the supports that may help you achieve those goals while living your life as independently as possible.
There are three different ways to manage your NDIS funding.
NDIS funding is designed to cover the reasonable and necessary supports you need to manage your disability and work towards your goals.
The NDIS funds a variety of supports and services that can include personal care, mobility aids, therapy, home modifications, and help with community participation.
Your NDIS plan is there to help you live your best life. But making the most of it can feel tricky at times. That is where a support coordinator comes in. They work with you to turn your plan into real, everyday support.
Working well with your support coordinator makes a big difference. When you build a strong partnership, you can reach your goals and gain more independence. Let’s look at how you can do just that.
A support coordinator is a person who helps you use your NDIS plan. NDIS stands for the National Disability Insurance Scheme. It gives funding to people with disability so they can get the support they need.
Your support coordinator helps you understand your plan. They explain what your funding can be used for. They also help you find services and support workers that suit you.
Here are some things they can do:
Think of them as your guide. They are there to help you feel confident and in control.
A good partnership works both ways. You and your support coordinator are a team. When you work together, great things happen.
Start by sharing your goals. Tell them what you want to achieve. Maybe you want to make new friends. Maybe you want to learn a new skill or live more on your own. Every goal matters.
Try these simple tips:
Remember, this is your plan and your life. You have every right to speak up. Your support coordinator wants to hear from you.
Good talking builds trust. The more you share, the better your support coordinator can help you.
You do not need to use big words. Just be yourself. Say what is on your mind. If something worries you, tell them. If you are happy with your support, let them know that too.
Here are some ways to keep talking easy:
There are no silly questions. Talking openly helps you both stay on the same page.
Your NDIS plan is full of possibilities. With the right support, you can use it to reach your goals and grow your independence.
Keep track of how your plan is going. Check in with your support coordinator often. If your needs change, tell them straight away. Your plan can be updated to match your life.
Try to stay involved by:
You are the most important person in your plan. When you and your support coordinator work as a team, you can build a life that feels right for you.
Take that first step today. Reach out and start building a partnership that helps you thrive.
Not all NDIS participants will get funding for a support coordinator. If this is you, there are a lot of people and resources that can help you navigate implementing your plan.
Start with your NDIS planner and your Local Area Coordinator. These people have an obligation to make sure you have the assistance you need. You might not get the dedicated focus and expertise of a support coordinator, but they are there to help you.
