A Guide to Changing Your NDIS Plan

Disability
6th October 2025

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is designed to be a flexible and responsive system, providing the supports you need to pursue your goals and live an independent life. As your life changes, so too will your needs and aspirations. This means your NDIS plan isn’t set in stone; it’s a living document that can evolve with you.

Understanding how to change your NDIS plan is a key part of exercising your choice and control. This article will guide you through the process, explain the different types of plan changes, and show how Healthcare Australia (HCA) can partner with you through every transition.

Why Your NDIS Plan Might Need to Change

Your NDIS plan consists of two main parts: your goals and aspirations, and the statement of supports funded to help you achieve them. Life is not static. You might start a new course, move to a new home, or find that your support needs have increased or decreased. As these life events happen, your NDIS plan may need to be updated to reflect your new reality.

Every NDIS plan comes with a reassessment date, which is a formal opportunity to review your progress and make adjustments. However, you don’t have to wait for this date. You can request a change to your plan at any time, and similarly, the NDIS can also initiate a review if they believe it’s necessary.

Understanding the Types of Plan Changes

There are two primary ways your NDIS plan can be changed: a plan variation or a plan reassessment.

1. Plan Variation

A plan variation involves making small or specific updates to your existing plan without needing to create a whole new one. This is usually the quickest way to make adjustments. According to NDIS rules, a plan variation is suitable for situations like:

  • Correcting minor errors: Fixing a spelling mistake, a calculation error, or an incorrect classification.
  • Adjusting funding: Changing the total funding amount based on new information, or reallocating funds between different support categories.
  • Changing plan management: Shifting all or part of your plan between agency-managed, plan-managed, or self-managed.
  • Updating providers: Changing a nominated provider for a specific “stated support.”
  • Adding crisis support: Providing temporary, one-off funding due to a significant and unforeseen change in your circumstances, such as a change in your living situation or a decline in informal supports.

2. Plan Reassessment

A plan reassessment is a more comprehensive review that often results in a brand new plan. While you have a scheduled reassessment date, you can request one earlier if your circumstances have changed significantly. The NDIS will typically look for major shifts in areas such as:

  • Functional capacity: A change in what you can and can’t do because of your disability.
  • Informal supports: A change in the level of support provided by family, friends, or unpaid carers.
  • Living situation: A change in where you live or who you live with.
  • Major life transitions: Starting or leaving school, university, or employment.

A reassessment may also be triggered if it has been five years since your last one, or if your current plan doesn’t have the newer funding structures like “funding components” or “funding periods.”

How to Request a Change to Your NDIS Plan

If you believe your plan needs to be changed, the first step is to communicate with the NDIS. You can start by talking to your NDIS contact, Local Area Coordinator (LAC), or Support Coordinator. They can help you understand what information and evidence you’ll need to support your request.

You can formally request a change by:

  • Completing a “change of details” or “change of circumstances” form on the NDIS website.
  • Calling the NDIS National Contact Centre on 1800 800 110.
  • Visiting an NDIS office in person.

To make a decision, the NDIS will require new information or evidence. For example, if your support needs have changed due to a shift in your health, you will need to provide recent assessments or reports from your doctor or allied health professionals. Being prepared with this documentation will make the process smoother and more efficient.

Your NDIS plan is a powerful tool, but it’s most effective when it accurately reflects your life. Don’t be afraid to ask for a review if things change. You deserve a support system that is as dynamic and individual as you are.
