Speaking up about what you need can feel scary. But you have every right to do it. Your NDIS plan is built around your life, your goals, and your disability, so the people supporting you need to hear from you. The more clearly you can share what’s working and what isn’t, the better your support can be. This blog walks you through some simple steps to help you feel more confident when it matters most.
A lot of people worry that asking for something will seem rude or cause trouble. It won’t. Asking for what you need is not complaining; it’s how good support works. Your support workers, coordinators, and plan managers are there to help you. You deserve to have a say in how that happens. If something isn’t working, saying so is the right thing to do.
A little preparation goes a long way. Before a meeting or review, take some time to think about what you want to say. You could write down:
Having notes in front of you means you won’t forget anything important, even if you feel nervous on the day.
Try to be as specific as you can. Instead of saying “I need more help,” try “I need help getting ready in the mornings three times a week.” The more detail you give, the easier it is for others to take action. Use your own words; you don’t need to use fancy language. If it helps, practice what you want to say with someone you trust before the meeting.
You don’t have to understand everything straight away. If someone says something you don’t follow, it’s absolutely fine to ask them to explain it again. Try saying things like:
There are no silly questions. Getting clear answers helps you make better decisions about your own support.
You don’t have to do this alone. An advocate is someone who helps you communicate your needs and makes sure your voice is heard. They’re on your side. You can ask a trusted friend or family member to come with you to meetings. You can also contact a free disability advocacy service; there are organisations across Australia that can connect you with someone trained to help. Your NDIS support contact can point you in the right direction.
Sometimes, even after speaking up, you might feel like nothing has changed. If that happens, don’t give up. You can:
You have rights, and there are people and processes in place to support you.
Speaking up for yourself is a skill, and like any skill, it gets easier with practice. You might not get everything right the first time, and that’s okay. What matters is that you keep going, keep asking, and remember that your needs are worth being heard. You are allowed to take up space in the conversation about your own life.
