Brain function is impacted enough to cause interference with someone\u2019s normal social or working life.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n  <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<div class=\"block-paragraph animation-container w-dsk-12 w-tab-12 w-mob-12 m-t-dsk-0 m-b-dsk-40 m-t-tab-inherit-dsk m-b-tab-inherit-dsk m-t-mob-inherit-dsk m-b-mob-inherit-dsk\">\n  <div class=\"paragraph body-copy-large default  l-h-default l-s-default   text-align-desktop-left text-align-tablet-same-as-desktop text-align-mobile-same-as-desktop c-dsk-1 c-g-dsk-r c-tab-1 c-g-tab-r  c-mob-1 c-g-mob-r\" style=\"\">\n    <h4>So, what is it like working with a client with dementia?<\/h4>\n<p>Caring for someone with dementia can be both rewarding and challenging. As it is specific to each person, people living with dementia may present with changes in behaviour and needs differently.<\/p>\n<p>Behaviour changes may include, reduced or confused communication, anxious or agitated states, hallucinations and false ideas, loss of inhibition, aggression, wandering, or depression.<\/p>\n<p>Changes to needs of the person and their care may include, communication needs, eating and nutrition needs, hygiene needs, continence, sleeping habits, memory abilities, and oral and dental health.<\/p>\n<p>As each person experiences different effects and unique needs from their care, it is pivotal to ensure you are up-to-date on treatments. The Australian Government has launched the Dementia Training Program to offer a national approach to accredited education, upskilling, and professional development in dementia care.<\/p>\n  <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<div class=\"block-paragraph animation-container w-dsk-12 w-tab-12 w-mob-12 m-t-dsk-0 m-b-dsk-40 m-t-tab-inherit-dsk m-b-tab-inherit-dsk m-t-mob-inherit-dsk m-b-mob-inherit-dsk\">\n  <div class=\"paragraph body-copy-large default  l-h-default l-s-default   text-align-desktop-left text-align-tablet-same-as-desktop text-align-mobile-same-as-desktop c-dsk-1 c-g-dsk-r c-tab-1 c-g-tab-r  c-mob-1 c-g-mob-r\" style=\"\">\n    <h4><strong>Dementia Training Program<\/strong><\/h4>\n<figure id=\"attachment_19698\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19698\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-19698\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Understanding Dementia<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Department of Health has created the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/healthcareaustralia.com.au\/course-online\/dementia-1-understanding-dementia\/\">Dementia<\/a>\u00a0Training Program that standardises the approach to education, upskilling and professional development for Dementia care as a country.<\/p>\n<p>The program is free to eligible care workers in residential or community settings. The course is run by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dta.com.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dementia Care Australia,<\/a>\u00a0who have a range of resources and free courses that can be taken online or in person.<\/p>\n<p>The program provides:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Continued professional development training on dementia assessment, diagnosis and management to GPs, nurses, pharmacists, psychologists, specialists, allied health, and other relevant professionals as appropriate.<\/li>\n<li>Accredited dementia care vocational level training courses \u2013 free to eligible care workers in residential, respite, community care, or the wider health services.<\/li>\n<li>Tailored onsite training to aged care providers who request assistance. This includes dementia skills and environment audit, followed by a specific and tailored training package.
